Provider the escort and charge them a bit for it. But than that fee will come back to bite us in the butt so either way we will get screw.
Anyway, we are not in the loop on this to really discuss this topic.

Provide a naval escort for the oil tankers. Have the countries with navys in the area take turns.

DRILL for oil in the US/Alaska. Wish it were an option. Interesting that you didn't even consider the obvious. We would not be held hostage by gas prices if we were drilling our own oil in ANWAR - where there is minimal life, only oil. I HAVE BEEN THERE>

Why would we escourt oil out of their country when our current policy of sanctions and a blockaid is meant to cut them off economically. Yet I see this has been the most popular answer here, that and war. Like Ron Paul says, why do we go around the world slapping them in the face and expecting them to not retaliate? Wake up we are the initiator to many of the wars and unrest around the world.

I say we need to end sanctions. First General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff said it was not clear that Tehran would use its nuclear capabilities to build an atomic bomb.
Why put sanctions on a country that there is no evidence of WMD as in Iraq. Iran states they want to build nuclear power plants to support the countries future energy needs. If there was evidence 1 they are no threat to us, and 2 Israel can defend themselves. If they need help they can ask their allies. But we put sanctions of them but still fund countries like Saudi Arabia that funds terrorist. We have this whole thing backwards.

JUST THE MERE MENTION OF THE WORD IRAN MAKES ME THINK OF AN OLD BLACK AND WHITE FILM OF "THE MAD SCIENTIST" AND AN OLD BLACK&WHITE FILM OF "FRANKENSTEIN"!!!! THE "LEADERS" OF THIS COUNTRY DO NOTHING BUT THREATEN OVER AND OVER AGAIN, "WE WILL DO THIS IF... YOU DO THIS"... THEN A DAY OR WEEK PASSES AND AGAIN THEY PLAY THIS "CAT AND MOUSE GAME OF, "IF YOU DO THIS,WE WILL...DO THIS"! IN THE MORNING(Tues.,Feb.21,2012), WE HEARD THEY ARE STOPPING OIL EXPORTS TO OUR ALLIES, BUT NOT A "WAR THREAT TO IRAN",FRANCE AND UK! JUST TO SEE WHAT WE DO ...

A navel escort will not stop Iran if their intentions are to stop the oil shipments.
If that happens, the U.S. will blow them out of the water.
Iran does not have the nerve to stop the oil shipments. I would love for them to try!

based on the results of the survey so far the breakdown is: --the 12% that say they don't know enough about the issue are the most honest --the 54% that want shipments to be escorted or totally blocking of the Iranian shipments are the most realistic responses given the circumstances --the 12% that say we need to declare war on Iran need to come off the testosterone shots --the combined 19% that say that we should do nothing or put more sanctions on or end sanctions or resume diplomacy are living in a dreamworld. I've got some ocean front property in MI that I'd like to sell you.

As a retired Naval officer, I believe that this is precisely the type of mission for which the US Navy is designed. We need to project our force and protect our interests abroad. Therefore we should provide protective escorts for tankers which transport petroleum products to our nation.

Many countries have nuclear weapons.
We fear Iran will ultimately have nuclear weapons.
Who decides which county is a trustworthy custodian of the "ultimate weapon"?

. With the Navy cuts, we do not have enough fighting ships of the types to escort every tanker. Especially since it would be folly to put all of our forces in one geographic spot.

Sammy, I respectfully disagree with you. What Iran does affects us, because so much of our and the world's oil is shipped through the straits. It's a global economy, and even if it did not prevent our own shipments of oil, we would feel the effects due to the increase in demand for oil from other parts of the world if the Middle East supply is cut off or diminished significantly. Supply would go down, and our gas and heating oil prices would jump, which would have a drastic effect on our economy.

I agree with the plurality of your voters, that we should provide naval escort ships for our oil tankers, but I also think that it very well may not be necessary, because Iran may be bluffing. Only time will tell.

I am still looking for the answer: "Mind our own business!" Instead of policing the world, bring our troops home to defend our country. Israel is the most powerful country in the region and has more vital interests there, so lets just back away from this.
BO has been itching to get US involved in another war. Iran is just reacting to the sanctions that we have imposed on them. The allegations that Iran is making a nuclear bomb has no factual support. Not unlike the Bush administration's claim that there were WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) in Iraq (When none to this day have been discovered), this is a false claim (Iran building a nuclear bomb) in order to give US some reason to get strapped to another "no win" and "undeclared" war.
The best of the available answers is to "End sanctions on Iran" or "Reach out for diplomatic relations with Iran", but to mind our own business would still be the best.

Iran is all talk. Blockading the straight will not only choke themselves, but other gulf nations. This would likely trigger a response that would devastate their economy.

Individual escorts would be expensive not to mention the potential for explosive confrontations would skyrocket. There are more solutions than the ones offered.
1. Anytime they try to set up a blockade then hit it. They couldn't afford to do that often due to material loss, especially with sanctions in place. That would minimize the potential for non-combatant casualties but still push them to seek other avenues.
2. Political pressure is useless against their current leadership, but I guess it couldn't hurt. Just keep pressuring them any way you can. Sanctions, embargoes, destroy their blockades. But if you relax any avenue of pressure they will exploit it.
